October was another very busy stretch for Filen: the new mobile app rollout has finished, our hiring and team expansion are progressing, marketing campaigns are about to kick off, the infrastructure for our upcoming Black Friday sale is being finalized, and preparations for the larger migration projects (Rust integrations, API 4.0, sync engine rewrite) are ongoing in full force.
We’ve summarized where we stand, what’s new, and what comes next.
Mobile App
The rollout of the new Filen mobile app is complete. Many of you use it every day without problems, and at the same time we see clear feedback from social media and from support about issues and places that still feel unpolished. We take every report seriously and we are focused on steady, visible improvement.
We have already shipped many patches and more are underway. We are prioritizing fixes by real world impact so the changes you feel most land first.
On our GitHub, you can see how actively we’re working to address all issues and ensure the app runs smoothly for everyone.
We are also changing how we test. Alongside the closed beta we will run a public beta once builds are generally usable, and we will keep it available throughout development. This gives us broader device and workflow coverage early in the cycle. We are tightening the closed beta as well with faster triage and clearer reproduction steps so feedback turns into fixes more quickly.
To be completly honest the release period was a bit messy and a few team availability changes meant we had to reshuffle work on short notice. That is not an excuse. It showed us where our process needs to be stronger. Going forward we are keeping product ownership more stable and reducing context switches so teams can stay focused.
To achieve that, we’re further growing the mobile team. Finding the right people takes a little longer because the app is complex and goes far beyond a simple frontend, but the search is active and interviews are under way. Strengthening the team is a key part of improving speed and polish.
We also want to make it easier to give input. We will launch a short survey focused on the new mobile app to collect broader, cross user feedback. We will share the survey & the results here on the Filen Hub.
Communication will stay straightforward. We will try to publish release notes for every update and maintain a short overview of known issues with current status. We will also continue to read and consider everything we see on social media and everything that reaches us through support.
Thank you for all the feedback so far. We are confident about the direction, we are listening, and we are turning your input into improvements while keeping the app moving forward.
Job Openings
We currently have two live job postings:
- Frontend Developer – Web Platform (React + Next.js, m/f/d)
- Mobile Developer – React Native (m/f/d, 10–40 hrs/week, 0-100 % remote)
If you know someone who might fit or if you are interested yourself, please take a look. As with the mobile team above: we are still hiring and building up the team.
Black Friday 2025
In case you missed it: our Black Friday 2025 campaign is planned to be very special. As previously announced, this will be the final return of our Pro Lifetime plans (Pro 1, Pro 2, Pro 3 and Pro X) for a limited time.
We know we keep mentioning this over and over (sorry for that) but we really want everyone to catch this:
Here is what you need to know:
- The 2025 "Black Friday sale" will begin on Monday, November 24
- Pro Lifetime Plans return one last time: Pro 1, Pro 2, Pro 3 and Pro X
- They will be sold at their regular price
- There will be special discounts on all regular monthly and yearly subscription plans
- After Black Friday, Pro Lifetime Plans will be gone for good
- The Starter Lifetime Plan stays available for now
One more nuance: we are evaluating a small adjustment around the pricing of the Starter Lifetime Plan and the Pro 1 Lifetime Plan so the step up feels more sensible.
Marketing
Our first influencer partnerships (co-operations) did go live a few days ago, and we have more in the pipeline. As announced in previous updates, this is part of our test campaign approach: we’re experimenting with several channels and messages to see which ones resonate most with potential users. The results from this test phase will guide how we scale our marketing efforts in the coming months (Q4/2025 and beyond).
Timeline & Roadmap Snapshot
With so many parallel efforts underway, here’s a quick refresher on major milestones (not the full roadmap, just the highlights):
- Q4 2025: Mobile App improvements and bug fixes
- Q4 2025: Sync Engine Rewrite (desktop client) rebuilt from the ground up for improved performance, stability, and edge-case reliability.
- Q4 2025: Marketing Test Campaign and Black Friday 2025 Sale.
- Q4 2025: Mobile App Rust Integration now prioritized ahead of the web and desktop migration. This will unify the mobile app with our Rust-based core, improving performance, reliability, and security.
- Following that: Web App and Desktop Client Rust Integration migration of our stack from TypeScript to Rust, with the goal of having the Rust SDK fully replace our current TypeScript SDK.
- H1 2026: API 4.0 + Filen Spaces (Foundational Phase) a major step forward with a redesigned encryption architecture, a WebSocket-based communication layer, and Filen Spaces as a core building block of/with the new API.
- Q2–Q3 2026: Filen Spaces Business Expansion advanced permission management, organization tools, and multi-user collaboration features.
- After API 4.0 2026: Security Audit
As you can see, many of the big initiatives are already in motion, and we deeply appreciate your patience while we execute them carefully.
Open Source & GitHub Sponsorship
We’ve begun supporting open-source projects that strengthen the Filen ecosystem, particularly smaller, passionate developers building tools that make development easier for many.
A special shoutout to rreverser, whose work has been foundational in helping us bring our Rust SDK to the web.
We rely on two of his projects for our WebAssembly compilation target, and his major contributions to wasm-bindgen have made Rust-for-web development vastly more accessible.
If you’re working on relevant tooling, SDKs, encryption libraries, or integrations that could benefit Filen and align with our open-source direction, please reach out.
Trademark “Filen”
We are pleased to share that we have now filed for the EU trademark “Filen” on behalf of the company, covering classes 9 (software), 38 (communication services) and 42 (cloud computing). Once registered, this will protect the name “Filen” in the EU for the next 10+ years. This is a behind-the-scenes legal step that strengthens our brand and ensures our long-term vision can be protected.
A Final Word
As we enter what promises to be a very intense phase for Filen, with multiple initiatives running in parallel, a major sale event, and several platform migrations, we want to take a moment to thank all of you for being part of this journey.
Your feedback, patience, bug reports, and ideas continue to shape our roadmap and our product.
Our focus right now is on perfecting our foundations, making everything that exists today as fast, stable, and reliable as possible, so that we can build even better things on top of it in 2026.
We look forward to sharing more concrete rollout dates, results, and Rust migration progress in our next update.
Stay tuned, and thank you for choosing Filen.
