We’re nearing the release of the completely rebuilt Filen Mobile App, and we’ve started preparing for the upcoming Closed Beta phase.
Whether you’ve already signed up or are just learning about this now, this post will walk you through what’s happening, what to expect, and how the beta will unfold.
Why Are We Doing a Closed Beta?
The new Filen app is not just an update. It’s a full rebuild from scratch. We’ve focused on performance, usability, and platform-native design for both iOS and Android. It’s a major step forward in how you access and manage your files on mobile.
Before we release it publicly, we want to make sure it runs smoothly across different devices and usage patterns. The closed beta gives us a chance to test the app in real-world situations, gather feedback, and make final improvements with the help of our community.
What’s Happening Right Now?
We’re currently putting together the group of testers who will participate in the beta. On our official Discord server, we’ve started assigning the "Mobile App Tester" role. This role will unlock access to three private channels once the beta goes live.
To begin, we’re assigning this role to users who:
- Filled out the mobile beta application form (no matter when)
- Indicated they use the current Filen mobile app
- Provided their Discord username
- Are already part of our Discord community
- Meet the other core criteria outlined in the application
Applications remain open and will stay open for the foreseeable future. We’re processing them roughly in the order they were submitted, but our final selection depends on what we currently need. For the best possible testing coverage, we’re aiming to include a wide range of manufacturers, devices, and operating system versions.
This first group is the fastest to onboard and already familiar with both the old mobile app and our Discord environment. Once that’s done, we’ll continue adding more testers from the remaining applicant pool as needed.
All further details and updates will be shared directly inside the beta channels. (Right before we release the first Beta Version)
How Will the Beta Work?
Once the beta officially begins, testers will gain access to three dedicated Discord channels:
🔸Releases
This is where we’ll post beta builds, changelogs, and update instructions.
🔸Bug Reports
A place to report issues, using a pinned guide to help keep reports structured and useful.
🔸Beta Lounge
A space for general discussion, questions, impressions, and direct communication with the Filen team and other testers.
During the beta, we’ll be asking testers to use the app in their normal day-to-day workflows and provide honest feedback. Reports on bugs, performance issues, and user experience are incredibly valuable at this stage.
What’s New in the App?
While we’re not revealing everything just yet, here’s a quick look at what you can expect in the reworked mobile app:
- A completely new home screen with better navigation and structure
- A redesigned media player for both video and audio, with background playback and playlists
- Smarter and more reliable automatic camera uploads
- A platform-native UI that feels right at home on both iOS and Android
- Major speed improvements for file previews, gallery loading, and overall responsiveness
- Enhanced document viewing, support for markdown, code, and common office file formats
- Global Search across your entire cloud, which is expected to be available by the time the beta begins or the latest to the official public release
This version has been built from the ground up to offer a faster, smoother, and more powerful mobile experience.
When Does the Beta Start?
We’re not sharing a fixed release date just yet, but if everything goes according to plan, we’re only a few weeks away from the start of the beta phase. Depending on how well the beta goes, the official release of the app may be delayed or shortened. However, we expect it to be sometime in Q3 2025.
